talent

AMERICAN singer Vanessa Carlton smiles a lot these days —
and with good reason.
Her single "A Thousand Miles" was nominated for record of
the year, song of the year, and best instrumental arrangement
accompanying vocalist(s) for the 45th annual Grammy
Awards.

As if that were not enough, Rolling Stone magazine named
Carlton one of the "Top 10 Artists To Watch in 2002."
Of course, this does not quite tell her story.
To find out who she really is, you have to go back to
Milford, Pennsylvania. "My mother is a piano teacher, and when
she was pregnant with me, she made sure to play certain
pieces, including lots of Mozart. When I was two, my parents
took me to Disneyland, where I heard 'It's A Small World' for
the first time. When we came home, I ran to the piano and
picked out the melody note by note. That's how it all began."
With her mother's help, she played often, and quickly
developed a versatile talent, composing her first piece at
eight. Though Carlton continued to improve, she slowly became
interested in ballet. But at 17 she became frustrated with
dancing and began writing songs again — this time with lyrics.
Commenting on her influences, Carlton says, "Always
classical music. To this day, I listen to classical music
whenever I need to relax. I like music that allows me to
discover something new each time I hear it."
